Even at 38, Stan Wawrinka is still brimming with energy. He dreams of the 2024 Olympics, a big step up the world rankings (currently ATP 74) and winning another title on the tour. The three-time Grand Slam winner is on an open farewell tour. Well: in doubles he has already achieved at least one of his goals. Together with Davis Cup colleague Dominic Stricker (20, ATP 106), Wawrinka wins the ATP 250 tournament in Gstaad BE.
The Swiss duo dropped just one set on their way to victory. In the final, the two bring the best placed Brazilian-Dutch duo Marcelo Demoliner/Matwe Middelkoop to their knees 7:6 (10:8), 6:2. Finally a home win for Wawrinka in Gstaad!
It is the Romand’s reconciliation with the tournament in the Bernese Oberland – because in the past he had to accept several setbacks here. In 2005 he lost the singles final against Gaston Gaudio in Gstaad, and in 2004 (with Marc Rosset) and 2008 (with Stéphane Bohli) he also lost in the doubles final.
Now, ten years after his last assignment in Gstaad, he has removed this shortcoming from his career. “Simply brilliant,” says Wawrinka, who suffered a setback in singles with the round of 16 out, but showed the perfect reaction in doubles: “I’m very pleased. We were supported by the fans, we got huge support.”
Wawrinka/Stricker’s victory in the packed Roy Emerson Arena comes immediately after Pedro Cachin of Argentina surprisingly defeated Albert Ramos-Vinolas in singles (3:6, 6:0, 7:5).
A decade has passed since Wawrinka won a doubles tournament (2013 with Benoît Paire in Chennai, India). And six years have passed since his last singles title (2017 in Geneva). Now in Gstaad he has gained momentum for the rest of the season, which will see the next highlight with the US Open in five weeks. And in the “Stan the Man” he also wants to put exclamation marks in the individual.
After the difficult years with his knee injury and bipedal operations, the success in Gstaad is like balm for the soul of the tireless Wawrinka.
