Saturday afternoon just before 5 p.m. high on the Weissenstein. The tension in the Northwest Swiss Wrestling Federation is palpable. The NWSV certainly only has one wreath at its home festival in the mountains, that of Tim Roth, who is only 18 years old. You can’t count on the Confederates anymore. However, someone was able to take the mountain crown that no one expected in the morning. Jonas Odermatt (19), younger brother of Liesberg Confederate Adrian Odermatt (22).

His last walk against the Bernese guest Gustav Steffen (27) ended in a posed situation. “I just didn’t want to lose and make life as hard as possible for him,” says Odermatt. He is still not 100 percent sure that his 56.25 points were actually enough to win the crown. His joy is therefore tied to a trace of uncertainty. But Brother Adrian, watching the festival from the stands, tried to calm down: “Yes, yes, that’s enough.” He will be right.

pity the brother

It’s a special situation for the eldest of the Odermatt brothers. Since he tore his pectoral muscle at the end of May at the Oberaargau Wrestling Festival, he has been doomed to watch. “Of course I want to swing along. But I’m still far from that. That muscle has to grow back first.” And that takes time. Currently there is little sport. In the late year Odermatt can start construction. But it won’t get back into the sawdust until January.

Until then, he cheers on his brother. “This is now my third party watching Jonas. It hasn’t been easy. I really sympathize with him and would like to help in some way.” Jonas appreciates the brotherly support. “It’s nice to have a helping hand. And then when I hear how I’m being encouraged from the outside in a fight, it gives me an extra boost of motivation.”

Expensive bet

On the Weissenstein, this motivation was probably the decisive building block. The Swiss from Odermatt is very happy with his brother’s first mountain wreath. Although it is very expensive for him: «On the Friday before the festival, I simply said that the whole evening would be on me if Jonas received the wreath. That can still cost money,’ says Adrian and adds with a grin that he is only too happy to keep his word in this case.
