First final on the ATP tour: Cachin surprises in Gstaad

In the end, luck works for the Argentinian. Pedro Cachin (28, ATP 90) gambled away a 4:2 lead in the decision set, but made another break at 5:5 as the linesmen messed it up. In the end he beats Albert Ramos-Viñolas (35, ATP 79) 3: 6, 6: 0 and 7: 5.

In the last two rallies of the decisive eleventh game, the line judges overlooked Cachin’s ball going out of bounds first (Ramos plays on and two strokes later results in a foul). Ramos-Viñolas would even have knocked the break ball away if a linesman hadn’t provoked the replay of the rally with a wrong call.

Nevertheless: Cachin appears to be a deserved winner in the Bernese Oberland. The Argentinian was released this week in Gstaad. Cachin made his breakthrough last season. He rose to number 54 in the world rankings. But just like the Swiss Marc-Andrea Hüsler, Cachin could not do much in the new season with the improved starting position.

For weeks, the Argentinian has been fighting to stay among the top 100 players in the world. After five victories in Gstaad, Cachin is now among the top 50 in the world for the first time in his career.

Fifth Argentine Gstaad winner

Cachin mainly traveled to the Saanenland because he achieved the best results at high altitude this season. In Madrid, he defeated two top 20 players, Francisco Cerundolo and Francis Tiafoe, at the 1000 Masters en route to the round of 16. Cachin finds his best form in the Gstaaderhöhe. On his way to the final, he remains standing without losing a set and knocks out top seed Roberto Bautista Agut.
