Confusion about the red card: Lucerne protests after a draw against Winti

First Super League round of the new season – and there is already a stir. The starting phase between FC Winterthur and FC Luzern is running (0:0). At the first stoppage, FCL captain Max Meyer (27) approaches referee Stefan Horisberger (34) and files a protest that the people of Lucerne want to lodge. This will be confirmed after the end of the game.

The reason: Wintis Samuel Ballet (22) received a direct red card for assault in the last preparatory match against Villarreal B. If you believe the official website of the Swiss Football Association, the attacking player was suspended for three games after the red card – and should therefore not have played against FC Luzern. “Ballet was declared blocked in the system,” says FCL coach Mario Frick, expressing his surprise at blue.

Winti has secured himself

FC Winterthur says that they secured themselves before the match and that the suspension against Ballet was subsequently lifted. “We asked for confirmation of the competition and then got the green light that ballet could play,” media chief Andreas Mösli told Blick.

The reason for the league’s decision could lie in Article 78 of the Judicial Code of the Swiss Football Association. Paragraph 3, number 1 states: “The principle of automatic suspension does not apply to all field references (straight red cards and yellow-red cards) in friendlies and tournaments.” Subsequently, paragraph 6 further explains: “For field references at friendly matches and tournaments, the competent authority decides on a possible suspension or fine.”

Similar case at the FCL months ago

At FC Luzern you are lost and you feel unfairly treated. Because on March 24 of this year, Lucerne player Denis Simani saw the red card – also in a test match – and was suspended for four games. “At the time it was said that the card could not be revoked. We just want justice with the protest,” Frick said. The coach does not want to blame Lucerne’s ‘weak’ game on this incident. “I don’t want to protect us. We played a really bad game and deserved a defeat.”
