In contrast to the men’s World Cup: The Bundesrat abandons the women’s national team

To cheer. Applause. Maybe even dust off a sweater at the end. True to tradition, federal councilors such as Alain Berset (51) and Guy Parmelin (63) are also in the stadium at the kick-off of the Swiss national team. At least when the men are playing.

When the Switzerland national football team won their opening game on Friday morning, neither President Berset nor Sports Minister Viola Amherd (61) were present. This should continue for the next games. “Participation of a member of the Federal Council in the World Cup in Australia and New Zealand is currently not planned,” the Federal Chancellery said at the request of the “Tages-Anzeiger”.

Berset to Russia, masons to Qatar

It is different when the men play: in 2018, Berset was still enthusiastic about football, traveled to Russia for the World Cup and even got a jersey there. The then minister of sports, Parmelin, also watched a match in the stadium.

Things were more complicated at the World Cup in Qatar last year: the number of federal councilors was limited – probably also because of the precarious human rights situation in the host country. But a solution was also found there: Ueli Maurer (72) was in jail with the Qatari finance minister during the match between Switzerland and Brazil.

At least one tweet

There are probably several reasons why the Federal Council now insists on women in Switzerland. On the one hand, the summer holidays, on the other hand, the World Cup in New Zealand and Australia – not exactly a stone’s throw away – is being played. And Switzerland doesn’t have to do without support at all. Sports Minister Amherd wished everyone good luck on Twitter. Anyway.

She should then be at the next European Championship in 2025 – which will take place in Switzerland. Amherd had campaigned for this. When the decision came down, she called Blick a “tremendous joy”. She is really looking forward to the big football festival. “I’m already rooting for the Swiss women” – at least at this World Cup from home. (brother)
