Marc Marquez has been in crisis for years. Does the future bring him a brand change at KTM and a career relaunch?
Matthew Dubachsports reporter

The most spectacular rider transfer is imminent in the motorcycle premier class since Valentino Rossi (43) switched from Yamaha to Ducati for two years. This time it’s about Rossi’s former arch-rival Marc Marquez (30).

The fallen superstar could switch from longtime employer Honda to KTM and start for the Austrian motorcycle brand as early as 2024. There has always been a certain bond through the common and powerful sponsor Red Bull, and as a young talent Marquez won his first title in the 125cc world championship on a KTM.

Marquez has long been dissatisfied with Honda

Will Marquez part ways with Honda after sharing six world titles? It would be an incomparable MotoGP hammer. The Spaniard has long been dissatisfied with his engine. Memorable how he hatefully gave his own bike the smelly finger after a near fall at the Sachsenring.

Honda has missed the train in the premier class in terms of technical development and is no longer able to win. Because Marquez wants to race away from the backlog with a lot of risk, he keeps falling and has been injured more and more since 2020.

Marquez is fed up with Honda. But due to existing contracts and constellations with the various teams and manufacturers, the eight-time world champion, despite superstar status, seemed to have no way to change.

KTM wants to take over a third MotoGP team

But now speedweek.com is reporting on a secret plan. In addition to the factory team and the Tech3 race team, which for marketing reasons names its bikes after KTM’s sister brand GasGas, KTM could equip another team to make way for Marquez.

With the MotoGP bosses not allowing a new team in the premier class, the Austrians now apparently want to persuade the privately owned LCR team to switch from Honda to KTM. If this coup succeeds, the driver duo would already be certain: in addition to Marquez, KTM wants to transfer its younger Pedro Acosta (19) to MotoGP.

But there are obstacles. Because both Marquez (annual fee of 25 million euros) and the LCR team are actually still tied to Honda for 2024. But perhaps even World Championship organizers behind the scenes will help find common ground – as it would be helpful for the TV ratings if the biggest name in MotoGP attacked with a new project and could potentially compete for victories again.
