Poubel’s emotional World Cup debut: “My friend knew I would score a goal”

Seraina Piubel (23) describes Nati’s 2-0 win at the start of the World Cup against the Philippines as an evening full of emotions. The highlight for the FCZ striker in Dunedin’s indoor stadium is the 64th minute, when she is in the right spot and scores to make it 2-0. The goal brings the decision. The start was successful, the first three points are sealed.

“It was a huge mess. Suddenly the ball was in front of me », Piubel describes the scene in which she immortalized herself in World Cup history. After Reuteler’s wing run, she misses Crnogorcevic and Sow; to kick the ball into the net. The feelings afterwards are indescribable. “I couldn’t believe it at first. I didn’t even know where to run and where the camera was.” She forgets about her planned goal celebration because her boyfriend, also a football player, asked her to show the number 77 – his shirt number – to the camera. “He knew I would score a goal,” says the beaming Piusbel.

Piusbel makes no secret of his nervousness

The hours before the game are already emotional for Poubel. Shortly before lunch she was told she would start on the right wing. “Of course there are certain tendencies in training, but you never know for sure whether you will actually play.” The first major tournament, the first World Cup and immediately in the starting line-up, Piubel makes no secret of her nervousness. “We were all nervous, but that’s part of it.” After a weak starting fifteen minutes, the Nati finds its footing. Just like the team, Piubel also improves – with the goal as the highlight.

Your successful World Cup debut is the provisional highlight of an excellent season. As the best player in the Super League, Piusel leads FCZ to defend their title. Her performances arouse the interest of foreign clubs, even FC Barcelona would have been watching her. “She has developed enormously and has become a leader at FCZ. She is someone who can make a difference. I am a huge fan of hers,” says Julia Stierli (26), who is celebrating her World Cup debut, just like Piusel.

“Be physically ready – then you will succeed”

Piusel is not yet one of the leaders of the national team. She will make her debut under Nils Nielsen (51) in the fall of 2021, but she will only be able to establish herself in the team under Inka Grings (44). She repays the trust of her former club coach. Piusel has scored three times in the last four games and has scored half of all national goals. The football talent is laid in her cradle. Her mother, Sandra Piubel, played an international match, her father is a former classification defender and FCZ coach Urs Meier.

Nadine Riesen (23), who came on as a substitute in the final phase, describes her colleague as a “determined and funny person with a huge will to win”. And Stierli adds: “Piubi has jokes and sayings that make you good.” Piubel’s goals also put everyone in a good mood. The next opportunity to do so is against Norway on Tuesday in Hamilton. Piubel’s recipe for survival against the Scandinavians? “We have to do it like New Zealand. Don’t let them play and be physically ready. Then it should work.”
