Now even Blick columnist Kubilay Türkyilmaz (56) believes in YB. “The champion is light years ahead of everyone else,” says the former striker with 62 caps and 34 goals. That is why he now clearly sees the Bernese ahead of Lugano in first place in his seasonal forecast.
Kubi regularly fell into the master tip before the start of the season in recent years. A year ago he saw Basel at the top. “Where am I wrong,” he says. So a bad omen for the title defense if YB is now in first place? “I hope Kubi is right the first time,” says Fabian Lustenberger laughing just before the start. “We clearly have the goal of becoming champions,” emphasizes the 35-year-old, who still has one season at YB.
Lustenberger is not alone in Wankdorf with his confident goal. YB team leader Steve von Bergen (40) is not only aiming for the national title, but also for the cup title and reaching the group stage of the Champions League. “We got the double for the third time in club history and want to relive these emotions,” says the former central defender, who took over from Christoph Spycher (45) a year ago, who in turn rose to the top of the board of directors.
The fans don’t have enough of the emotions either – on the contrary. They give YB a record before the start of the season: 21,770 season tickets were sold shortly before the start on Sunday against promoted Lausanne, more than ever before in the club’s history. At 23,000 subscriptions, sales would be stopped so that individual tickets would remain available. The stadium has 31,500 seats.
YB has had a tough preparation and must therefore look for freshness before the start of the weekend. Defender Loris Benito (31) reveals what the week before the start looks like: “The content is the same, but the length of the training and the intensity is a bit less.”
The preparation took place under special circumstances. “In the training camp in Gstaad in July, we missed 15 or 16 players,” says coach Raphael Wicky (46). This is the flip side of YB’s success. Many players were unable to go on holiday after winning the cup on June 4. They traveled to their national teams and youth national teams and only then on vacation. The Bernese are not worried about that. The difference in strength with the competition is too great. Even Kubilay Türkyilmaz sees that now.
