Lavreysen simply sprints to the quarterfinals at the World Championships, Van der Wouw and Lamberink to the final

Harrie Lavreysen got off to a good start in the sprint tournament at the Track Cycling World Championships. The 25-year-old Dutchman is in the hunt for his fourth consecutive world title in this part in Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines.

The defending champions don’t have to contend with their great rival Jeffrey Hoogland this time. The number two of the last three World Cups had to withdraw on Saturday morning because he was still suffering from a fall on his head.

Hoogland suffered the injury when he fell after the final of the Keirin in which he won silver behind Lavreysen. On Friday, Hoogland won gold in the (non-Olympic) kilometer.

fastest time

Lavreysen left no doubt in qualifying who the big favorite for gold is. He set the fastest time of the field with 9.224. In the round of 16, he easily prevailed against Colombian Kevin Quintero.

The quarterfinals are scheduled for Saturday night. Semi-finals and finals are on Sunday.

Where Lavreysen was allowed to skip the second round thanks to his sharp qualifying time, Sam Ligtlee and Tijmen van Loon, Hoogland’s backup, found their Waterloo there. Ligtlee lost against the Colombian Cristian Ortega Fontalvo, World Cup debutant Van Loon didn’t make it against the German Stefan Bötticher.

Van der Wouw and Lamberink in the final

Hetty van der Wouw and Kyra Lamberink can prepare for the final of the 500 meter time trial. 24-year-old Van der Wouw set the fourth fastest time in qualifying, while 26-year-old Lamberink was eighth.

The fastest time was set by Emma Hinze, who surprisingly had to relinquish her world championship title in the sprint on Friday. The final begins at 5:30 p.m. on Saturday evening.
