Rachel Rinast (32) is at the World Cup in New Zealand – but very different from what was thought a few weeks ago. Two months before the start Down Under, the left back resigns from the national team with immediate effect, she no longer feels like taking on the mental effort for a final round as a side player. But one of the most fascinating figures in Swiss women’s football will remain despite the end of his career. Rinast will go to New Zealand as an SRF expert and will comment on the national team, which she knows inside out.

Actually a tricky constellation

I was still there in April when I moved in together – now I can judge the performance of my ex-teammates on television. Basically a constellation that contains explosive material. But Rinast’s new role is met with a lot of goodwill in the team.

But if she does criticize, she can rely on a lot of background knowledge and thus assess things better. She knows things about the team that are hidden from most people.”

Crnogorcevic suspects funny episodes

As a dress rehearsal for the World Cup, Rinast accompanied SRF commentator Calvin Stettler during the test matches against Zambia and Morocco. It was already clear – as Crnogorcevic suspects – that it can also be funny to have Rinast on the air every now and then. Because she sang a few bars of the movie number “The Lion King” live on the TV microphone.

In the beginning it took some getting used to experiencing the previous colleague on the sidelines of the friendlies in Biel and Winterthur ZH and soon in New Zealand in a new role, says Nati star Noelle Maritz (27). “She brings a lot of experience, also from the final. It’s cool that someone who really comes from women’s football has been given this role,” said the Arsenal player.

Eseosa Aigbogun, like Maritz and Crnogorcevic, plays with Rinast for eight years and says: «She knows us all very well. She’ll be okay. I look forward to watching it.”

Rinast could be heard throughout June: the Swiss-German dual national commentary on the U21 European Championship for men on Pro7. And Rinast also continues to play football. Because she also moves back to her northern German homeland due to her father’s illness, she will play for the St. Pauli Women’s Regional League in the future.
