It was a big surprise when Tottenham introduced Ange Postecoglou (57) as their new coach at the beginning of June. Instead of a familiar name like Julian Nagelsmann (35) or Roberto de Zerbi (44, Brighton), Spurs brought in a coach who has never worked in a top league – and gave him a four-year contract.
Someone who supports this decision is Pep Guardiola. The city coach was convinced after the announcement: “An extraordinary manager is coming. He’s going to do great.”
Guardiola has known Postecoglou for four years. In 2019, ManCity met Japanese champions Yokohama in a friendly match, then with Postecoglu on the sidelines. City won 3-1 but the Spaniard’s style of play left a lasting impression on the Spaniard. Years later, Guardiola is still enthusiastic about his professional colleague. For Postecoglou, who previously worked as a club and later as national coach in Australia (2014 World Cup participation, 2015 Asian champion), Yokohama will be a springboard to Europe.
In 2021 he will move to Celtic Glasgow, where the Australian with Greek roots has achieved legendary status in just two years. He takes five of a possible six league titles and led Celtic to their eighth treble in club history. At Tottenham there is hope that Postecoglou will also take titles with his new employer. The traditional club from North London has been waiting for such a match since 2008 (League Cup).
The lack of a title is also the main reason why club icon Harry Kane has been traded as a substitute candidate for years. This summer, the striker will be chased by Bayern Munich. Honorary chairman Uli Hoeness is even convinced that Tottenham will eventually give in as long as Kane wants the transfer.
Postecoglou leaves these statements cold. “He’s here. And as long as he’s here, he’s fully committed to what we do. As far as I’m concerned, it doesn’t impact me in any way. If other clubs want to talk about players under contract with us, that’s more their problem than ours,” he said at a pre-test match press conference. The talks with his star player are not about an upcoming transfer either. “We’ve mainly talked about the club and where he thinks he stands and where we can improve.”
Is this just smart poker to maximize Kane’s transfer fee? In any case, Bayern will reach to the ceiling to capture the striker. And the desperation would be great if the deal fell through after you seem to agree with the player and count on the obligation. If Postecoglou can convince his star player to stay, it would throw a nasty spanner in the works for Bayern.
