Jeffrey Hoogland will not take part in the sprint tournament at the Track Cycling World Championships in Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines. The 29-year-old Dutchman fell on his head on Thursday after the finish of the keirin and is still suffering from it, says national coach René Wolff.
The decision comes a day after he won gold in the 1km time trial, a non-Olympic event. At the beginning of this world championship he also took silver in the team sprint and in the keirin.
Hoogland has won silver in the last three World Cups and finished second in the sprint part at the Tokyo Olympics. “It was an emotional decision,” Wolff admits. “Because he’s good enough to fight for the world title here.”
But Wolff doesn’t want to take “any risks” with Hoogland. “Also because the Olympic path starts in February and the preparation for it starts much earlier. He has to be absolutely ready for that.”
21-year-old Tijmen van Loon replaces Hoogland in the part that starts today. “It’s a great opportunity for Tijmen van Loon to measure himself against the competition at this level,” says Wolff. The final takes place on Sunday.
