Carlos Alcaraz hears the cash register ringing.

The triumphs at Grand Slam tournaments are not only the most prestigious on the tennis tour, but also the ones that flush the most money into the account.

In addition to the cup and 2000 world ranking points, there is also a check for about 2.67 million francs for the brand new Wimbledon champion Carlos Alcaraz (20).

For the young Spaniard, it is not the first million-dollar amount that ends up in his account in one fell swoop. There was already about 2.24 million francs for his victory at the US Open last year.

Nearly a million a month

In his young career, Alcaraz has won about 16.9 million francs in prize money. At the age of twenty he is already a multimillionaire. In the first seven months of this year alone, Alcaraz brought in more than 6.7 million francs, or 957,143 francs per month. And already exceeds the amount he won all last year (about 6.5 million Swiss francs).

In comparison: Novak Djokovic (36), who had to bow in the Wimbledon final, has received around CHF 5.6 million in prize money so far in 2023. And that despite the fact that he won not one, but two Grand Slam tournaments (Australian Open, French Open). However, Djokovic “only” played eight tournaments – two fewer than Alcaraz. The Spaniard makes the difference mainly because, with one exception, he has always reached at least the semi-finals (six tournament victories). Djokovic (three tournament victories) only succeeded five times.

Much more than Federer at age 20

Even when Djokovic was Alcaraz’s age, he wasn’t nearly as successful. In 2007, when the Serb celebrated his 20th birthday, he won almost 3 million in prize money after winning five tournaments. Roger Federer (41) also couldn’t keep up at the age of 20. The Maestro earned CHF 665,470 in 2001 when he won a tournament. Only when Rafael Nadal (37) as a 20-year-old also adds his prize money – about 3.2 million francs with five tournament victories – do the three come together on the amount that Alcaraz alone has earned in seven months.

Impressive. Even if it should be taken into account that the prize money has increased in recent years. Nevertheless, it’s just an indication that Alcaraz is well on its way to one day playing in similar spheres as the three. (bir)
