20 years ago in Gstaad: how Federer fared as a fancier

class=”sc-29f61514-0 fQbOYE”>

Traveled 20 years ago Roger Federer as the brand new winner of Wimbledon at the ATP tournament in Gstaad. The organizers gave him the cow as a reward for his first Grand Slam title Juliette. Before entering the tournament, King Roger tried milking. With moderate success. Only a few drops of milk ended up in the bucket. After that, Federer milked the opponents and reached the final in 2003.

Former Romanian tennis player Viktor Hanescu won exactly one tournament during his career: in 2008 in Gstaad. In the final he clearly defeated the Russian Igor Andreyev in straight sets. Hanescu stepped down in 2016. He will celebrate his birthday this Friday 42nd birthday.

These are the record winners in Gstaad

1. Roy Emerson (86): 5 wins, 2 final losses
1960, 1961, 1966, 1967 and 1969: No tennis player has won the tournament in Gstaad as often as the Australian. There are also two last defeats. After his career he was inducted into the Hall of Fame.

2 Sergi Bruguera (52): 3 wins, 2 final losses
Between 1992 and 1994, the Spaniard achieved the title hat-trick in Gstaad. Bruguera was a real sand specialist. It makes sense that he won his only two Grand Slam titles at the French Open.

3 Alex Corretja (49): 3 wins
Almost the same applies to the Spaniard as to Bruguera. Corretja also won three times in the Bernese Oberland. And he also celebrated his greatest successes, two Grand Slam finals, at the French Open.

4 Jaroslav Drobny (†2001): 2 wins, 3 last defeats
The Czechoslovak played ice hockey in the winter and tennis in the summer. Both successfully. In 1947 he became world hockey champion and as a tennis player he won three Grand Slams (twice French Open, one Wimbledon).

5 Guillermo Vilas (70): 2 wins, 1 final loss
The Argentinian was in the final three times, of which he won two. Casper Ruud, Thomaz Bellucci, Jiri Novak and Emilio Sanchez also won twice.

18 years

It has been a long time since a Swiss has been in the individual final in Gstaad. It was 2005 when it Stan Wawrinka made it to the final. There he had no chance against the Argentinian Gaston Gaudio and immediately lost in two sets 4:6 and 4:6.
