Despite or precisely because of his many injuries, Fabian Lustenberger (35) decided to add at least one more season in the YB dress. “I wasn’t ready to stop yet. The decision to continue was made relatively quickly,” says the Lucerne resident during the cup trip, on which YB Captain Lustenberger brings the championship trophy and the cup trophy to the Bernese Museum.

A fighter by nature, Lustenberger suffered repeated injuries during his time with YB, some of which set him back several weeks. In April 2021 he tore his Achilles tendon and had to take 18 weeks of rest. Other minor injuries followed, often muscular tales.

“I’ll Be Ready”

This summer he participated with YB the entire preseason. Lustenberger aims to play a key role in defense again and lead the team through the season. Especially since two defenders, Cédric Zesiger (25) and Kevin Rüegg (24), have left the club. Last year, the 35-year-old started 20 times in the YB, but was not spared from injuries. That should change next season. “I feel good and fit, I will be ready when it starts.”

Lustenberger is enthusiastic about Amenda

It starts on July 23. Then Lustenberger starts with YB against Lausanne-Sport in the title defense mission. The defender is relaxed about the summer departure. Also because YB has one of the greatest Swiss defender talents in its ranks with 19-year-old Aurèle Amenda. “He is – I think – 15 years younger than me. This is madness. Aurèle was always there in the important matches and stood up for herself. If he continues like this, a bright career awaits him. He will help us achieve our goals in the coming year.”

One of those goals is the national title. He has already won the championship trophy three times with the Berner, but first he has to celebrate. The first two championship victories fell prey to the corona pandemic. The next YB master party should take place next year. It’s possible that this could also serve as Lustenberger’s farewell party.
