An almost forgotten record: Verstappen is chasing the oldest Schumi record

Unfortunately, they are almost forgotten, the records of Michael Schumacher (54). And now the oldest record is up for discussion again. Because long-term winner Max Verstappen (25) was on the podium in Silverstone for the eleventh time in a row. Who has made more stage appearances in a row? There would be Vettel (11), Alonso (15), Hamilton (16) – and Schumi (19). It is a record that has not yet faltered, but has become vulnerable. When was the last time the Red Bull Honda star was not in the top three? It was 2022 in Brazil (6th). Incidentally, the race in which the Bulls conceded their latest defeat in the last 21 World Cup races – at the hands of Russell in the Mercedes.

The Schumi series ended in Australia

Schumi missed his 20th consecutive podium (from 2001 Indianapolis to 2002 Suzuka) at the start of the 2003 season in Australia. The German finished 4th in the Ferrari – beaten by Finland’s Kimi Raikkonen (McLaren-Mercedes) by just 0.29 seconds. The two fought for the world title 20 years ago to the end. As a reminder, Schumi was only 93:91 ahead at the finish at the Japanese GP because Schumi’s teammate Barrichello won ahead of Kimi – Schumi was only 8th at the time.

Budapest awaits

And there would still be a Schumi record. With the Ferrari, the seven-time world champion from Monza 2000 to Kuala Lumpur 2001 won six times in a row – always from pole position! Can Verstappen match this record in Budapest next Sunday? A year ago, the Dutchman won in Hungary – but Russell had taken pole position in the Mercedes. George then finished third in the race behind teammate Hamilton. A year ago, places 4 (Sainz) and 6 (Leclerc) remained for the Ferrari team, which was still struggling. Alfa-Sauber started without a point: 13th Zhou, 20th Bottas (problems with the fuel system – but started from the fourth row).

McLaren is back

Change of power in the battle for 5th place in the world championship. McLaren-Mercedes overtook Alpine at Silverstone with 59:47. Norris (2nd), who led the first five laps, now has seven podiums but has never won. Here Heidfeld (46) leads with 13 podium places without a win!

DeVries drops out

Nyck de Vries (28) is the first loser in 2023. The often too arrogant Dutchman is replaced at the bottom of Alpha Tauri by Ricciardo (34) from Budapest. The Australian never wanted to sit in a bad car again…
