European U23 Championship in Finland: Kambundji wins gold in the hurdle sprint

Ditaji Kambundji (ST Bern) won the first gold medal in these title fights for the Swiss team. With 12.68 seconds, the 21-year-old from Bern was clearly the strongest athlete on the field. She took 29 and more hundredths of her opponents.

With this top performance in the most important race of the season so far, Kambundji improved her personal best, which she set last year at the World Championships in Eugene (USA), by two hundredths. Six hundredth difference with the Swiss record of Lisa Urech in 2011 in La Chaux-de-Fonds.

Kambundji impressively showed that she could count on her at major events. In 2021 she became European U20 Champion in Tallinn, third at the European Championships in Munich in 2022, and in March of this year she also won bronze at the European Indoor Championships in Istanbul.

Right at the start of the evening session on Saturday, the Swiss 4×100 m sprinters caused a bang. Natacha Kouni (LC Zurich), Iris Caligiuri (Lausanne-Sports), Léonie Pointet (CA Riviera) and Melissa Gutschmidt (Lausanne-Sports) completed the track loop in 43.59 seconds to secure the bronze medal behind Great Britain and France.
