Tadej Pogacar (white jersey) cannot take off Jonas Vingegaard’s yellow tights yet.

Jonas Vingegaard successfully defends the yellow jersey in the first stage in the Alps. The Dane withstood an attack from Tadej Pogacar and leads the general classification by 10 seconds on the Slovenian.

Vingegaard gets a bonus second more than Pogacar at the last mountain prize and at the finish. In doing so, he even extends his lead slightly. Pogacar got loose on the last climb, but was overtaken again before the top by last year’s winner.

The winner of the 14th stage arriving in Morzine is the Spaniard Carlos Rodriguez, who attacks in the final descent to the finish. Behind him, Pogacar and Vingegaard take 2nd and 3rd place.

First, the Jumbo-Visma team with leader Vingegaard tested the Emirates team with Pogacar who drove over five passes. The profile, with double-digit gradients in the final incline, seemed more tailored to the Dane. Because the steeper it gets, the more important body weight becomes. Being 5kg lighter than Pogacar, Vingegaard should have an advantage over the Slovenian, who is more explosive in sprints thanks to more muscle mass.

Rodriguez settles into the descent

In practice on the Col de Joux Plane, a mountain prize in the Hors Catégorie at 12 km from the finish, the theory was initially not confirmed. Pogacar attacked but couldn’t get away well. The gap was never more than 100 m, just before the top of the Vingegaard pass ran out again and the pace collapsed. Rodriguez made the connection again in the descent and drove away thanks to risky steering skills. The young Spaniard is participating in the Tour de France for the first time and is now third in the intermediate classification.

The start of the 14th stage was marked by a bad mass crash. In a corner a few minutes after the start, several dozen riders crashed on a wet road. Tour officials neutralized the race while the injured riders were evacuated.

On Sunday, the 15th stage comes after 179 km in Saint-Gervais Mont-Blanc with a finish in the mountains. (SDA)
