Nightmares in the World Cup camp: DFB team turns rooms upside down because of poisonous spiders

Germany is one of the favorites for the Women’s World Cup in New Zealand and Australia. But almost a week before the start of the tournament, football is not the only subject in the German camp in Wyong, Australia. They are the infamous Australian wildlife.

“I got nervous when I saw so much green on arrival,” goalkeeper Merle Frohms (28) told “Bild”. In the room she first had to play it safe: “When I entered the room, I immediately looked behind the curtains, under the covers and under the bed. I checked the whole room for spiders. Luckily I didn’t find anything, so I could sleep peacefully.”

“You can speak of a phobia”

The goalkeeper of VfL Wolfsburg has been struggling with a spider phobia for some time. She regularly has nightmares about “big and hairy spiders” that are in her room or would walk all over her. “It would be stupid if that became a reality in Australia,” says Frohms.

Her housemate Sara Doorsoun (31) is also afraid of the scary critters. “I’m really afraid of spiders, you could call it a phobia.” The Frankfurt defender couldn’t help you: “My mother told me that killing spiders brings bad luck, and in general I don’t want to kill any animal. But they have to get out of the room.”

The zookeeper in our own ranks

In the worst case, captain Alexandra Popp (32) helps. The striker is a trained zoo keeper and has already had to intervene. When the ball fell into a bush during an internal teqball (football on a ping pong table) game, Popp had to get it. “I’m not in it,” said midfielder Sydney Lohmann (23) afterwards. The captain is welcome to do his thing.

Trainer Martina Voss-Tecklenburg (55) is also not afraid: “Here is the most poisonous spider in the world. But I’m not one to run away screaming when a spider appears,” said the former Swiss national coach.

However, by July 24, the German women will focus again on football. Then the DFB selection will meet Morocco in their first group game of the World Cup. Colombia and South Korea are waiting later. (byl)
