When she visits Tunisia, she can hardly save herself from fans – now the whole country, even a whole continent, looks enchanted at Wimbledon: Ons Jabeur replaces her homeland in a state of emergency. The 28-year-old has become the great hope of millions of people.

After an incredible tournament, the world number six takes on Czech Marketa Vondrousova (24/WTA 42) in the Wimbledon final and says: “I hope I can make history. Not only for Tunisia, but also for Africa.” She would be the first African woman to win a Grand Slam trophy.

What makes her even hotter for the title this year: she lost the final on the holy turf last year. In three sentences she lost to the Kazakh Elena Rybakina. And a little later she lost to Iga Swiatek (22, Pol) in the final of the US Open.

“We love you – whether you win or lose”

Now it should finally work on the third try. The defeats could not dampen the storm of enthusiasm Jabeur faced. On the contrary: the woman from Monastir grows into an icon. And she’s also made a name for herself on tour in recent years. Jabeur is considered one of the most popular and funniest players in the closet, with several videos to back it up.

The fans nicknamed her “Minister of Happiness” because of her happiness. “It’s great. People tell me: we love you – whether you win or lose,” says Jabeur, when asked about the high expectations ahead of the Wimbledon final.

That Jabeur is there at all is a huge effort on their part. Against Bianca Andreescu (third round), Rybakina (quarter-final) and Aryna Sabalenka (semi-final), she managed to turn the match around after a set deficit. In the final against Vondrousova, she and her millions of fans would definitely want to miss this sensation.
