The Tour de France is in full swing. The big absentee is Chris Froome. The 38-year-old man is missing due to an injury.
When his team boss Sylvan Adams (64) is asked about the four-time tour winner, he attacks him head-on. “Cycling Week” asked him if Froome was worth the money. “Absolutely not,” replies Adams. The Brit has been under contract with Israel-Premier Tech since 2021 and is expected to earn around five million euros a year.
According to Adams, Froome’s commitment was “not a PR exercise”. “Chris is not a symbol, he is not a PR tool. He should be our leader in the Tour de France and he’s not even there yet. So no, I can’t say it’s worth the money, no.”
Since Froome has been under contract with Israel-Premier Tech, he has finished 133rd in the Tour de France and has taken early retirement once. Since his fall in 2019, the Briton has struggled to find his old form.
For Sylvan Adams and his team, the risk did not pay off: “We had a double risk: the risk of the severity of his injuries and, of course, his increasing age,” he explains.
But Adams goes even further: “In my opinion, Chris’ current performance has nothing to do with his injuries. I don’t think Chris uses that as an excuse anymore.”
If Froome wants to drive again, Adams says he will have to replace one of the other drivers. Unrealistic for the team boss: “Honestly, he didn’t deserve his place!” How things will go on for the record driver at Israel-Premier Tech remains to be seen. His contract with the team runs until the end of 2024, with an option for a further two years. (byl)
