Research from the University of Zurich shows: Spectators have a distorted view of women’s football

The study was written by the University of Zurich with the cooperation of Norwegian and American colleagues, the university announced on Thursday. 613 people – 276 women and 337 men – with an average age of 34 years participated. Zurich researcher Carlos Gómez González investigated prejudice in football.

The subjects were shown ten video recordings of the most watched goals by women and men at the world’s top level in 2019. The researchers showed one group of blurred images that disguised the gender.

It turned out that the subjects rated the men in the non-blurred photos better than the women by 4 points on a five-point scale (3.8). Both genders received a 3.5 for the out-of-focus shots.

According to the researchers, the generally lower figure was due to the poorer image quality. The study also found that men rated women playing football worse.

For the researchers, the study proves that in male-dominated sports, gender stereotypes lead to poorer assessments of women’s playful qualities.

For women’s football, this has an impact on media perception, investment and economic potential. The study is published in the journal Sport Management Review.
