Wimbledon final score: Czech ends Switolina fairytale

1/7
From the dream of the first Grand Slam title for Elina Switolina.

Wimbledon has already written many stories, Elina Switolina (28, WTA 76) could have written her own. But in the semifinals is the last stop. The Ukrainian loses this against Marketa Vondrousova (24, WTA 42) 3: 6 3: 6.

The first set is still reasonably balanced, but in the second the Czech jumps away to 4:0. Although the 28-year-old can still reduce to 3:4, she doesn’t want to make the comeback. She admits the break and has to leave Center Court a little later as a loser. She steps into the catacombs in tears, the audience rises and gives her an encouraging round of applause.

Switolina missed the Wimbledon final for the second time after 2019. She then lost to the eventual winner Simona Halep (31), who is currently suspended due to a doping incident. For Vondrousova, it is the second final participation in a Grand Slam tournament after Roland Garros 2019. At Wimbledon, she is the first unseeded player in 60 years (Billie Jean King) to qualify for the final – the fifth ever.

And there she has to deal with Ons Jabeur (WTA 6), who fought her way back to the final after 2022. In the second match on Thursday, she beats Aryna Sabalenka (25, ATP 2) in three sets, because the Tunisian turns the game around in the quarterfinals against Elena Rybakina (24, ATP 3).

The 28-year-old loses the starting set in the tiebreak and then starts her ascending series. After taking over the serve from the Belarusian 5-4 in the second set, she didn’t give her opponent a chance in the third round. With a powerful game, few mistakes and a lot of precision she wins 6:3.

This makes it clear: there will be a new Wimbledon winner this year. The decision will be made on Saturday afternoon. (che)
