Evicted and brought back: Now Donis Avdijaj is talking about his FCZ reboot

Before sitting down to dinner in the lobby of the team hotel Zurich in Tyrol, Donis Avdijaj (26) takes care of his FCZ colleagues. The German Kosovar was given glasses and water, which he handed over to teammates Mirlind Kryeziu and the press officer from Zurich. Avdijaj is back at FCZ – a year late, is he still fueling the Super League?

“I am confident enough to say that given the preparation so far, I have legitimate hopes for as many missions as possible. Now I want to go to the maximum,” says Avdijaj.

“You can never get rid of the stamp of the past”

For the first time as an FCZ player, the lively attacking man talks extensively about himself and his changing career. It ranges from a fixed €49 million transfer fee as a junior from Schalke to a car accident to successful years in Austria to being without a club.

“Those stories are a long time ago. But if you get a stamp on you when you’re young, you’ll never get rid of it. I was at the top and at the bottom, but always kept working. That requires mental strength,” says the man with ten stations in six countries. “Now that I have had two very nice years (at Hartberg, ed.), I have been able to develop into a protagonist and call myself a winner because I always want to win in training.”

The former Bundesliga super talent made the move to the Super League last August as Franco Foda’s dream player. But despite three European Cup goals, Avdijaj never really arrived in Zurich. After Foda’s dismissal, he was sidelined under Bo Henriksen and loaned back to Austria, where Zurich had taken him from.

Understanding Henriksen’s decision in the fall

Now Avdijaj is back, but the coach’s name is still Henriksen. “I’m confident because I can really show myself this time,” says Avdijaj. Things got complicated in the fall: “Sometimes there are zodiac signs that are hard for everyone.”

When Henriksen took over in the middle of the English weeks and had to make quick decisions, Avdijaj, as Foda’s favorite player, didn’t exactly have the best cards. “I just wanted to stay at my level, hence the step back to Hartberg,” says Avdijaj.

With five goals and four assists in the last ten rounds in Austria, the former Schalke player starts the FCZ preparation with confidence. “I’ve had a really good second half of the season. Now I’m back here, stepping on the gas and I absolutely want to play.”

In three friendlies, Avdijaj played as a striker and scored four goals. Whether it’s enough to convince Henriksen remains to be seen. Especially since Zurich is still looking for a striker.
