Schwinger boss Strebel: That’s why VAR is currently unthinkable

The victory of Joel Wicki (right) against Werner Schlegel caused discussions on the Rigi.

There was also a lot to talk about on the last Schwing Sunday: the judges. On the Rigi with two more than controversial decisions. On the one hand, Samuel Giger (25) was awarded the result against Stefan Ettlin (25), although Ettlin managed to save himself over the bridge. And on the other hand, King Joel Wicki (25) paved the way to the final with the given lightning strike against Werner Schlegel (20), who was not two-thirds of his shoulder blades in the sawdust.

That’s why Wicki hated Sempach – and Blick!

For Blick-Schwing expert Marcel W. Perren, it is clear: the three Central Swiss judges really wanted King Wicki to fight the last battle of the day. In the wrestling podcast he confronts Stefan Strebel (46), three-time Confederate and technical director of the Swiss wrestling federation ESV. He doesn’t want to dodge, but “how many decisions does a referee have to make on a Sunday? He has to see if the pants are right, if the grip is right and finally if someone won and give the numbers. That’s several hundred decisions per side.”

Controversial decision for king: Wicki puts Schlegel on his back within seconds(00:51)

But it is true that they were wrong in the two big duels, the television images would also show that. “It kills, but that’s what swinging is all about.” In the podcast you can hear why there are no more wrong decisions than before.

A year and a half ago, Strebel started a discussion in the committee about the introduction of a VAR in swinging. The vast majority were against it. He understands that. “VAR discussions take away the emotions and in the end we still don’t have 100 percent certainty that everything is correct,” says Strebel. In the podcast, he gives other reasons why there are currently arguments against the Schwing-VAR – even though almost all fixed vibration systems use TV cameras.

Long awaited comeback
“Giger has learned from past mistakes”

Christian Stucki (38) has recently expressed interest in becoming a referee. “Is that why he approached you?” Perren wants to know. Strebel tells you the answer in the podcast. In any case, he would very much welcome it if the king takes over this position in 2019.

In addition, the two discuss who are currently the best wrestlers. And who Marcel W. Perren would bet big money on to win the Southwest Swiss Wrestling Festival next Sunday. (bir)
