At the end of May, PSG goalkeeper Sergio Rico was seriously injured in a driving accident in his native Spain. The 29-year-old was taken to the University Hospital of Seville and has been in intensive care ever since.
He was kept in an artificial coma for 19 days, the doctors fighting for his life. The Spaniard is now on the mend, he was allowed to leave intensive care a few days ago.
Rico is now reporting on social media for the first time after the accident and sends words of thanks to his fans: “I want to thank everyone who showed and sent their affection for me during these difficult days.” His healing is progressing, he continues: “I’m still working on my recovery, it’s getting better every day. I feel very happy, thanks again everyone and hope to see you again soon.”
The athlete’s body suffered greatly from the time spent in intensive care. According to The Athletic, Rico has lost more than 20 kg of body weight. He also lost about 30 percent of his muscle mass each week since the accident. The 1.95 meter tall goalkeeper weighed about 90 kg before the accident.
After the Spaniard woke up from the coma, he first had to learn to speak again. “Sergio communicates. He calls us by our name and knows exactly who we are,” his wife Alba Silva said with relief at the time.
The accident was also clearly felt at his club PSG. The championship celebration, which took place at the beginning of June, was all about Sergio Rico. In addition to warm-up shirts with the Spaniard’s face on them and great choreography by the fans, superstar Kylian Mbappé also dedicated a goal to his goalkeeper and cheered with his jersey. (byl)
