Bayern Munich strikes on the transfer market: Min-Jae Kim (26) moves from Italian champion Napoli to Bundesliga and signs a five-year contract until 2028. Even before his arrival in Munich, the South Korean is causing a lot of commotion.

On the one hand, the German record champions would have paid a lot of money for the central defender. However, different figures are circulating about transfer fee and salary. According to Sky, the stipulated exit clause that Bayern has drawn for the Serie A star is “around €50 million”, and he should earn between €10 and €12 million a year. Meanwhile, the “Gazzetta dello Sport” writes about a transfer fee of about 58 million euros and a salary of seven million euros.

Second most expensive transfer in Bayern’s history

In addition, an advisory commission will probably be due, which can amount to 15 million euros. That would mean that more than 70 million euros would be owed for the transfer of Kim. After Lucas Hernandez (80 million euros), who now replaces Kim, the South Korean international is the second most expensive acquisition in Bayern Munich’s history.

The question is whether this amount has been well invested. It is known: Kim is the absolute dream player of Bayern coach Thomas Tuchel. Meanwhile, the name Min-Jae Kim is probably mostly heard by those who follow Serie A.

In Italy, Kim was celebrated during his time at Napoli and was voted best defender of Serie A last season. Together with Dutch ex-Juve star Matthijs de Ligt (23), he must provide Bavaria with an Italian-influenced defense of the Higher class.

“The monster”

His previous boss has no doubts that he can do it. Naples coach Luciano Spalletti recently couldn’t stop being excited. “Kim does at least 20 incredible things per game, for me he really is the best central defender in the world. If he starts running and has the ball at his feet, he can put it in the opponent’s penalty area in five seconds.” And, “He’s incredible, always aggressive.” Because of its robustness, it is also called «the monster».

The age of the South Korean also caused some confusion in advance. In his home country, the professional footballer was rejuvenated by two years. The East Asian country recently changed its traditional age calculation. Until now, every child was already one year old at birth. Moreover, around the turn of the year – and not on the actual birthday – people became one year older.

26 or 28 years old?

Kim was one year old when he was born on November 15, 1996. On January 1, 1997, he was already two years old, and on January 1, 2023, he was already 28 years old. With the change in age counting, Kim is now 26 years old in South Korea and around the world, up from 28.

The age change can’t really play a role with Bayern’s bosses. They hope that the talented central defender will also make an impression in the Bundesliga. The conditions seem promising. (mbi)
