Long awaited comeback: “Giger has learned from past mistakes”

Christian von Weissenfluh takes a close look at current events in sawdust.

Fabian Staudenmann (23) made headlines at the Swiss wrestling festival. Not because he won the festival, but because two of his opponents, Werner Suppiger (34) and Damian Stöckli (26), offered little resistance in the ground fight and thus prevented the Bernese from reaching the maximum mark.

In the swing podcast, Christian von Weissenfluh (57), who came from Bern twice and took part in the final course of Unspunnen in 1993, takes a closer look at the scenes. And comes to the conclusion: “I feel like they thought, ‘This is done anyway, I’m letting go’. I don’t think they said, ‘Oh, don’t make ten’.” Blick reporter Marcel W. Perren counters that Suppiger is usually one of the strongest on the scene. You can read in the podcast to what conclusion the two eventually come to.

The Bernese wrestlers are also a problem in other respects. Perren reveals which culinary experience with retired Christian Stucki (38) has left him permanently. And he philosophizes with von Weissenfluh about who could follow in Stucki’s great Bernese footsteps.

Favorites to win Unspunnen

In addition, the two address the wrestler who has shaped in recent years: Samuel Giger (25). At the time the podcast was recorded, it was not yet clear that he would make his comeback on the Rigi on Sunday. The Thurgau has only participated in three wrestling festivals this year. Perren and von Weissenfluh, whose niece Michelle is Giger’s girlfriend, agree: he is still one of the favorites for the Unspunnen victory.

“Lately I felt that Giger always had a hard time playing the role of favorite when there were highlights,” says Perren. “It’s different now, Staudenmann is the absolute top favorite and Sämi can attack from the second row. I think he will be a fire hazard.” Moreover, Giger has learned from past mistakes. You can hear which ones they are in the podcast.

The two will also tell you which wrestlers have particularly surprised them this season so far. And in which they are disappointed. (bir)
