At the Jamaican Athletics Championships in Kingston, Shericka Jackson set the pinnacle in the women’s 100 meters.
The world champion in the 200 meters and silver medalist in the 100 meters at the last World Championships is the fifth fastest woman of all time at 10.65 seconds (Florence Griffith-Joyner’s 1988 world record is 10.49). Shericka Jackson effortlessly secures her second national title in the 100 meters and qualification for the World Championships in Budapest this summer.
Two-time Olympic sprint champion Elaine Thompson-Herah, who has been battling injuries this season, is only fifth in 11.06 seconds.
Jackson is amazed at how fast she was. She didn’t even dare to have such a time. But this time she got off to a good start: “I said last year my biggest problem is the start and I think I’ve mastered it tonight, but I have to go back to the drawing board with my coach (Paul Francis).”
Her training partner, little-known 21-year-old Rohan Watson, stunned his more experienced competitors with a time of 9.91 seconds to win the men’s 100-meter sprint. (SDA/dti)
