is she too young Was your body at its limit after the intense last months with competitions in the championship, with the U19 national team, at the U17 European Championship and the debut including preparation for the World Cup with the senior team? Or was it just bad luck? The injury of Iman Beney (16) raises questions.

One thing is clear: Beney is by no means the only player who will miss the World Cup due to a cruciate ligament rupture. In addition to captain Leah Williamson, European champion England also has to do without Beth Mead. The Dutch top striker Vivianne Miedema is also missing. The French Delphine Cascarino also tore the cruciate ligament, Marie-Antoinette Katoto is not yet fit enough to be back Down Under.

Anatomical and physiological reasons

Problem area knees! Studies show that the risk of cruciate ligament rupture is three to eight times higher in women than in men. There are anatomical reasons why there are so many cruciate ligament injuries in women. “Simply put, we are less able to control and stabilize our knees,” says Federal Doctor Dr. Tanja Hetling (44). “We have much less strength in the core and gluteal muscles that are supposed to protect the knee.”

The menstrual cycle also plays an important role. Around ovulation, when estrogen levels are highest, the risk of injury increases. “You actually have the most strength then, but the estrogen causes the ligaments to relax,” says Hetling. According to the orthopedist and traumatologist, there are studies that show that most cruciate ligament injuries in women occur during this phase of the menstrual cycle.

burnt children

Many in the national team have experiences with cruciate ligament tears. Viola Calligaris (27) tore her ACL in the winter of 2020. She probably didn’t train well, said the defender. “It was only because of the injury that I got to know my body much better and now I know what it needs.” It happened to Géraldine Reuteler (24) in the spring of 2021 towards the end of a training session – without any resistance. “I hadn’t been feeling very well all day and was a bit distracted.” Recovery took a year as Reuteler had to undergo a second operation.

A burned child is Meriame Terchoun (27). The striker already tore her cruciate ligament three times. The volume of training and the number of competitions have increased, said the Zurich native. “There is still a lot to come from men’s football. Maybe we will look back in twenty years and realize that we should have trained differently.” Terchoun was on the verge of giving up several times, but was lucky with his bad luck, because three times it was an isolated cruciate ligament tear. “Otherwise I would have probably won’t play at this level again.”

progress in training

The development of women’s football does not stop with medicine and training theory. More, but especially more targeted strength training helps reduce the risk of knee injuries. “The entire leg axis, from foot to trunk, must be functionally trained,” says Hetling. Cycling-based training and nutrition are also becoming increasingly important to prevent injuries.

Football is a contact sport. Injuries are included. It is to be hoped that Iman Beney will return soon. The example of Malin Gut (22) shows that after such an injury it can also go the other way around. In May 2021, the then Arsenal midfielder tore a cruciate ligament. Since then, the Aargauerin, one of the SFV’s greatest talents, has not returned to top football.
