The Dutch judokas did not manage to finish the World Championships in Tashkent with a medal in the national tournament. In the fight for bronze, the mixed team had to admit defeat to Israel after an injury to Sanne Vermeer in the final game: 2:4.
Due to the defeat, the orange delegation in the capital of Uzbekistan is stuck on two bronze medals: for Sanne van Dijke, who was not available for the Nations Cup due to a bad foot, in the category up to 70 kilograms and Michael Korrel in the category up to 100 kilograms.
Frank de Wit and Korrel did what was expected of them and won their matches despite Korrel needing a gold score in the 90+ kg category. It was a disappointment that Guusje Steenhuis (over 70 kilograms) lost to the heavier Raz Hershko.
Pleuni Cornelisse and the not quite fit Ivo Verhorstert then suffered hopeless defeats, after which Vermeer (up to 70 kilograms) had to draw the line against Maya Goshen. The duel, in which the Friesian was the inferior but fought for her skills, ended in overtime.
In it, Vermeer injured his knee, forcing her to retire, sealing Orange’s fate. The injury appears to be serious and will be investigated further after returning to the Netherlands.
The Netherlands started the national tournament with a narrow 4:3 win over Kazakhstan, but had no chance against the judo superpower Japan in the quarter-finals: 0:4. Only De Wit had chances in his match before Goki Tajima defeated him in overtime.
The Netherlands started the second leg against Ukraine with an advantage because there was no opponent for De Wit.
Vermeer then quickly finished with Anastasiia Antipina and Steenhuis’ opponent Yelyzaveta Lytvynenko, who had previously won the World Cup bronze in the 78 kg category, was disqualified for a dangerous technique. Korrel scored the fourth point in the Golden Score: 4-0.
The gold-in-the-country tournament went to Japan, who also won five world singles titles last week. In the final, the Asians were 4-2 too big for France.
