Vera Pauw came out on July 1 with the report that as a player she had been raped by a football coach, who shortly afterwards became a high-ranking official at the KNVB. After that it was very quiet in the Netherlands, said the former national coach of the Orange Women Along the line and around.
“And the painful thing is, the abuse of power continues to this day. Nobody wants to believe that,” said Pauw about the situation at the KNVB. “All sorts of things have come out that I don’t want to have any contact with them or that I haven’t mentioned it, haven’t given names … All of that isn’t true.”
“The massive silence of the sport, that touches me very much. Both on an individual and on an institutional level. I don’t get any support from anyone. In Ireland it was the exact opposite.”
In Ireland, Pauw is the head coach of the women’s national team that guided her to their first World Cup on Tuesday. And it feels like a warm bath with the Irish. “Not only the players and the club, but also the people on the street hugged me and protected me.”
“It’s such a contrast to the way it’s handled in the Netherlands,” she continues. “If you then have the feeling that you can contribute something to such a historic moment (the World Cup qualification, editor’s note), then it also feels like you’re giving something back to the people. That was so intense.”
Pauw’s story has already sparked action in Ireland. “The Irish FA said: That woke us up. We should think about always picking the victim first and making sure the victim is okay. In the Netherlands there is no time yet. taken care of.”
“There was a conversation with the KNVB, the second conversation was only my lawyer,” explains Pauw. “I am now considering the next steps with my lawyer.”
Due to the confidentiality of the talks, the KNVB does not want to respond to Pauw’s statements.
