Australian Jai Hindley has won the first mountain stage of the 110th Tour de France.

Jai Hindley made his mark on the first of two Pyrenees stages. The captain of German team Bora-Hansgrohe, winner of last year’s Giro d’Italia, celebrated a solo victory from a bigger breakaway after 162.7km from Pau to Laruns. In addition, the 27-year-old Australian replaced Briton Adam Yates at the top of the general classification. The previous leader reached the finish, more than a minute and a half behind, only on the 15th of the day.

Jonas Vingegaard made a strong impression during the first endurance test in the high mountains. Last year’s winner from Denmark crossed the line in fifth, more than half a minute behind the day’s winner with the first group of chasers. Two-time Tour champion Tadej Pogacar, on the other hand, lost about a minute to Vingegaard and suffered a first setback in the fight for the Tour throne.

In the general classification, Hindley leads Vingegaard 47 seconds, followed by Italy’s Giulio Ciccone (1:03 back) and Germany’s Emanuel Buchmann (1:11), Wednesday’s second and fourth stages, as well as former leader Adam Yates (1st place ). :34). Sixth overall, Pogacar is nearly a minute behind Vingegaard.

The first mountain finish of this Tour de France will follow on Thursday. The 6th stage is relatively short at 145 km, but will demand a lot from the riders with almost 4000 altimeters. With the Col d’Aspin (12 km long / 6.5 percent steep) and the famous Col du Tourmalet (17.1 km / 7.3 percent), the peloton can expect two hard rocks before the day winner is determined to Cauterets-Cambasque . The last climb is 16 km long, but with an average gradient of 5.4 percent, it is much less difficult than the two classic climbs before it. (SDA)
