After a hot sprint on a car race track: Jasper Philipsen with the second stage victory

class=”sc-29f61514-0 jbwksb”>

Jasper Philipsen (center) triumphs again in the sprint duel.

Jasper Philipsen doubles shortly afterwards in stage 4 of the Tour de France. A day after his stage success in Bayonne, the Belgian is also the strongest in the sprint finish in Nogaro.

Philipsen was launched perfectly on the long home stretch at the Paul Armagnac motorsport circuit by his team-mate Mathieu van der Poel and hoisted his bike after 181.8 km just before Australian Caleb Ewan crossed the finish line. With his fourth victory of the day in the Tour de France, the 25-year-old teammate of Silvan Dillier from Aargau also takes over the green points jersey from Alpecin-Deceuninck.

Yates easily stays in yellow

Before numerous crashes occurred in the frenetic sprint final, the flat stage was like a walk for a long time. The peloton set an easy pace the day before the first stage in the Pyrenees. For a long time there were no signs of attacks. Only after almost 100 km did a breakaway group form. The two Frenchmen Benoît Cosnefroy and Anthony Delaplace dared to go on the attack, knowing that the sprint teams would probably overtake them again. This was then a fact at 24 km from the finish.

Adam Yates’ maillot jaune has never been compromised. The Briton continues to lead the standings six seconds ahead of his Slovenian UAE teammate Tadej Pogacar and twin brother Simon Yates. Geraint Thomas last succeeded in 2017 in the leader’s jersey at the start of the Tour de France.

The first mountain stage is coming

On Wednesday, the man in yellow will be challenged even more. The 5th stage takes you into the mountains for the first time, on the 162.7 km from Pau to Laruns you have to conquer the Col de Soudet, a climb of the highest category. More than 18 km before the end, the first of two Pyrenean stages also leads over the top of the Col de Marie Blanque.

Then there is the descent to the finish, which Tadej Pogacar remembers well. In 2020, the Slovenian celebrated his first stage victory in the Tour de France in Laruns – together with the Swiss Marc Hirschi. Adam Yates, on the other hand, had to hand in his leader’s jersey on the same day. (cat/SDA)
