He just took the stage with Coldplay at Zurich’s Letzigrund – now Roger Federer has his next big gig. This time in his living room, at Wimbledon. The place where his career really took off in 2003 with his first Grand Slam title and where he eventually achieved a record eight victories.

Federer will be honored for this record in Center Court on Tuesday afternoon. The 41-year-old from Basel is the guest of honor and may take a seat in the Royal Box during the duel between defending champion Elena Rybakina (23) and Shelby Rogers (30). The top spot for the best Wimbledon player of all time.

“We will have a special celebration on Center Court before the game starts (2.30pm CET) to pay tribute to Roger Federer,” announced All England Club president Sally Bolton: “We will take a moment to celebrate his achievements celebrate and thank you for all the memories.” Federer probably won’t be seen on the hallowed lawn — an emotional video review and a standing ovation are planned in his honor.

Hand in hand with Mrs. Mirka

Federer excitement on Church Road is already there in the morning when the 20-time Grand Slam champion arrives at the facility. At 11:20 am London time, he walks down Henman Hill towards Center Court, holding hands with Mrs Mirka and surrounded by a handful of guards. And of course: countless, sometimes screaming fans who suddenly discover the superstar, take pictures or applaud.

Some, realizing too late who they’re strolling the outer squares with, jump after the Federers. Closely watched by the many guards, some of whom are heavily armed, who inspect the scene from the roof of the nearby broadcast building.

Federer had his last sporting appearance at Wimbledon in 2021, in the quarterfinals against Hubert Hurkacz (26) from Poland in three sets. It was his last appearance as a professional before announcing his retirement in September 2022. Federer was also a surprise guest at Center Court’s 100th anniversary last year. Now this year he has the chance to experience a special day in the magical place of his career.
