The fact that the Tour de France started in the Basque Country this year resulted in many positive reactions from the field of riders. No wonder, because the region has lived up to its reputation as a cycling enthusiast.
Silvan Dillier (32), one of the two Swiss riders in the Tour, saw more than just emotional fans along the routes during the first stages on the Basque roads.
Dillier explains to “Gruppetto” magazine why the races in the coastal region are so different from the other competitions. “If you come out of the grass during the race, you know you’re in the Basque Country,” says de Aargauer.
SRF then asked Dillier again about the statement for Monday’s third leg. The driver of the Alpecin-Deceuninck team adds with a smile. “You can just smell how many people are consuming marijuana here on the side of the road. I think that’s really unique for this region.”
For Dillier & Co. however, the special smell should be over by now. Monday’s 193-kilometer stage already took the field across the border into France. The next 18 races will now all be held on French soil. (cat)
