The FIA commissioners were already overwhelmed with penalties at the GP of Austria. But when Aston Martin subsequently protested, they had to work night shifts. And rewatch over 1200 scenes every second.

83 cases – then the theater began

During the 71 laps, 83 cases were recorded by the commissars and spies along the route. So a violation against the track boundaries in turns 9 and 10. Whoever crossed the white line with the whole car there was penalized with one point.

Driver, car, strategy – where are the sources of error?

In the sprint qualifying on Friday, 47 offenses were penalized and the lap time was deleted each time. That didn’t work on Sunday. Anyone who did not control their car this time received a five-second time penalty after four violations. Then the register of sins was cleared – and everything started again. Threatened disqualifications would have achieved more!

The FIA was lost

Aston Martin asked: Have you really penalized all of the offences? The FIA sheepishly had to admit they were off track. And started again. In the end, eight drivers received additional second penalties: Ocon (30), De Vries (15), Sargeant, Hamilton, Sainz, Gasly and Albon (10 each) and Tsunoda (5).

The pedestal remained untouched

The FIA was lucky: the podium (Verstappen, Leclerc, Pérez) was spared the chaos. And the remaining seven points were shuffled. Sainz was the only one to lose two places (sixth instead of fourth). Gasly (Alpine) swapped positions 9 and 10 with Stroll (Aston Martin), as did the two Mercedes (7 and 8). Norris (4th) and Alonso (5th) each gained a spot thanks to Sainz.

In the end, the protesting Aston Martin team had three more championship points – and Ferrari four less. Added to that were the pissed off fans who had long since left the track with a wrong result.

Alfa-Sauber won 3 places

The “winner” in the scoreless was Alfa-Sauber. Zhou, whose tear-off visor was lost in the cooling system: 12th instead of 14. And slow starter Bottas, who immediately damaged his front wing at Tsunoda: 15th for 16th.

MotoGP against a gravel bed

The last sentence after hours of FIA detention was the most important one: we recommend Formula 1 to change something on these two corners!

The simplest solution behind the curbs would be a gravel bed instead of asphalt. But MotoGP, racing here in August, disagrees: “Too dangerous!”

Who will find a solution?

Now the major route in Styria (where 340,000 tickets were sold this time) is looking for Columbus’s egg. Not even the circus can afford such a theater.

Even if there were beautiful scenes. Hamilton, repeatedly warned by Mercedes, shouted over the radio: “Okay, okay, but what about Sainz? He crosses the white line every time!” Incidentally, only two drivers had a clean sheet: Russell and Zhou.
