Commentary on Xhemailis Nati-Ausbootung: A decision that irritates

With the omission of Riola Xhemaili, Inka Grings drops a small bomb more than two weeks before the start of the tournament in New Zealand and Australia. A player who has signed a three-year contract with Champions League finalist Wolfsburg is of course not among the top 23 in our country. That’s strong stuff – and with regard to the future, it sends the wrong signal.

With a lack of fitness and a lack of playing time, Grings justifies the distance of the midfielder, whose confident appearance can also be interpreted as arrogance. But: Xhemaili had faith in football from an early age and, although only 20, already has international experience with 42 Bundesliga and 22 international matches. It is one of the great promises in the SFV.

Instead of Xhemaili, there are ten players from the Women’s Super League. A league that is semi-professional, if at all, and where players have to work alongside football to make ends meet. The pace is therefore not too high, Servette and champion FCZ were recently shown the limits in the Champions League.

The question is: who can help the team if Switzerland meets the strongest in the world in the knockout round at the latest? If you want to push boundaries, as Grings demands, the national team needs the best in the country. And Xhemaili is undoubtedly one of them.
