The game plan worked for 103 minutes before a deflected shot from Miranda abruptly ended the U21’s European Championship adventure. Thanks to the best defensive performance of the tournament, the Swiss rocked the favourites, but the bottom line was that offensively it was not enough for an “all-or-nothing game”. Amdouni’s interim 1-1 in the 91st minute, which forced extra time, came with the Swiss team’s first real chance to score.

Who convinced? who fell off And who was okay? The Blick diploma after the best U21 European Championship from a Swiss perspective since 2011.

winner

Zeki Amdouni: His 1-1 draw against Spain is the 27th (!) goal since the beginning of the year. The Basel player was the only player to live up to the high expectations of the proven national team trio of Rieder, Jashari and Amdouni. He is unlikely to return to FCB after the holidays. Has once again proven at the U21 European Championship that he is ready for higher tasks.

Injury time compensation: That Amdouni goal kept the semi-final dream alive(00:17)

Aurel Amenda: At 19 he was the youngest on the team, but he played against France and Spain as a veteran. Some observers see the new Akanji in the YB jewel. To wait. But it certainly has the potential for the steep climb to the top.

Nicholas Vouilloz: Seizes his chance in the third group match against France, also strong in the quarterfinals against Spain. A rare and sought-after object as a left-back – if he continues like this he should soon become a subject for foreign clubs and the A-Nati.

Amir Saipi: Before the tournament, skeptics said YB’s Marvin Keller should be in goal instead of Saipi. The Lugano pro then impressed with three stable performances in the group stage and a top performance in the quarter-finals, in which he kept his Olympic dream alive with several “big saves”.

loser

Becir Omeragic: Had to play left back against Norway and Italy and fell through. Bitter for him: he probably would have looked better in his usual center position…

Levi Blum: Blame the third, finally conceding too much against Italy. And when the Spaniards lost 1-0 in the quarter-finals, they completely lost track. Offensively attractive – he fell short of his defense duty. Was it because he was less defensively challenged at YB?

deflected shot: Spain’s 2-1 against Switzerland in extra time(00:31)

Ardon Jashari: Started the tournament weak against Norway, was stable against Italy, owed the 2-1 draw against France and showed a modest performance against Spain. Mario Frick, his trainer in Lucerne, says Jashari has no upper limits. Measured by that, it was not enough at the U21 European Championship.

Phillip Stojilkovic: After being promoted to the Bundesliga with Darmstadt, he traveled to the European Championship with great confidence. But in the opening game against Norway, he had already reached his limits when he was allowed to play for Amdouni. Even after that, his joker bets were subpar.

Ok but expected more

Fabian Rieder: Exemplary in effort, and with two assists and winning the ball for the first goal against Norway, it is also a statistic. But he seemed less dominant than many – and probably himself – hoped. Now the question arises: who will put the 12 million demanded by YB on the table for Rieder?

Dan Ndoye: Very striking moments due to his speed and courage to dribble. Two tournament goals speak for him. Against him, however, the (too) many accidents fell near the opponent’s goal.

Darian males: Anyone who travels to the European Championship as a top scorer from FC Basel automatically has high expectations. Had calf problems during the preparation for the European Championship and therefore only started against France and Spain. Played for the benefit of the team, but surprisingly discreet and had no statistical influence.

Castriot Imeri: The best Swiss in the first two group matches. Against France and Spain, his performance curve then points steeply downwards. Especially in the quarter-finals he would have needed strokes of genius, as he did.
