Belinda Bencic is back: the East Swiss had to do without the tour for a long time.
Marco Pescio And Sven Thomas

For weeks, there was a question mark over Belinda Bencic’s physical condition. After her first round in Paris, she initially announced the attack on grass. But then came the cancellation for ‘s-Hertogenbosch (Ho), then for Berlin. It was another long forced break after the 26-year-old was unable to play tennis five weeks before the French Open due to a stress reaction in her thigh.

Now the mystery has been solved: the thigh caused problems again after Paris, she explains before her first appearance at Wimbledon (Monday against Katie Swan, 24, WTA 146). In addition, there were complaints to the shoulder, which she had already recorded in Roland Garros. Instead of an attack on grass, it was a slow approach. She says: “I was able to prepare well.” Short and painless – literally, after all.

That’s why counting is so funny in tennis

Coach Matej Liptak (45) is back at Wimbledon. The Slovakian Fedcup captain had already accompanied her to Paris. As a “test”, as Bencic explained at the time. After the surprising divorce from Dimitri Tursunow (40) in the spring, the number 14 in the world did not want to rush anything. Now she says, “He’s fine.”

Teenagers throw a garden party in the neighborhood

She and her team have moved into a house close to the facility – “for the Wimbledon feeling”, as she puts it. No transportation to the tournament is required, Bencic, like many other tennis stars, is within walking distance these days. She laughs: “Recently there was a garden party next to our house. Then I looked back and saw many teenagers. I don’t know what the reason was – possibly a high school diploma. But everyone went crazy, the DJ was really great.”

She also “went wild” on that music – during her new Wimbledon hobby, which she has been internalizing for as long as possible during the tournament: “We just started a 3000 puzzle,” says the East Swiss. Although they are currently only sorting the individual particles. And then she says with a wink, referring to a tournament victory: “It’s huge and super complicated. I think that’s why I have to stay here for two weeks.”

Belinda Bencic in top form is definitely one of the favorites at Wimbledon. But how far is the woman who has played only one match (the one in Paris) since the beginning of April? Bencic says: “I certainly got used to the surface. Wimbledon is and will always be my favorite tournament. I hope I can perform as well in the match as I did in training!”
