The big disappointment of the year: Bottas and the world ranking

My nice colleagues from Sport-Bild have been working on the new story for next week for days: They also want to achieve a world ranking in Formula 1. And soon they had to realize that this world ranking does not necessarily have to correspond to the current World Cup status.

The exception is the sovereign World Cup leader Verstappen and the two rear lights without World Cup points. Sergeant and De Vries.

But then the hunt for positions begins. Is Hamilton’s tireless fighting spirit higher than the fresh nature of the soon-to-be 42-year-old Alonso? Norris, Russell, Leclerc and Ocon push forward. Pérez and Sainz have been driving good cars for too long to perform miracles. Where do you classify them?

In terms of points, Bottas is only slightly better than Zhou

It’s tricky to work out a Formula 1 world ranking. And she will always alienate some fans, who of course have their favorites. Bottas’ 18th place in Sport-Bild (15th in the World Cup) is no coincidence. The Finn is one of the setbacks of the year. With his experience of 10 wins and 20 pole positions, he should clearly dominate teammate Zhou, just like in 2022. A year ago it was 49:6 for Bottas, now only 5:4.

Hinwil’s permanently poor results also play a role in a world ranking. The two Alfa-Sauber drivers are regularly presented there by Williams-Mercedes (Albon) and Haas-Ferrari (Hülkenberg).

Pinching F1 stars

On Thursday at the PK, five drivers were asked who the three best drivers were. De Vries and Hulkenberg only told Verstappen to avoid. Piastri at least got Verstappen and Alonso off the lips. Russell also mentioned Max, then resorted to, “Lots of drivers doing a good job!” And Verstappen himself? “You can only orient yourself to your teammates.”
