Friendly draw for Carlos Alcaraz at Wimbledon

Author: DPA via Europa Press | EUROPAPRESS

Murcian will make his debut against Jeremy Chardy, see Medvedev in the semi-finals and not only Djokovic would compete in the hypothetical final

The draw started at all english club and the first name heard was that of Carlos Alcaraz. His letters were written in the first hole in the box, which little by little was filled with other favourites. For the first time in his career, he is the favorite, at least according to the ranking, because, looking at his merits, it is hard not to think of Novak Đoković, the seven-time champion in the Cathedral, as a great candidate. for the second year.

The Spaniards and Serbs will not be able to see each other until the final, as this is the game everyone wants to witness. This is not a surprise and has been known since Roland Garros, when it was clear that both would occupy the first and second places in the rankings. It remains only to guess in which order.

With Alcaraz first and Djokovic second, the door to the Wimbledon draw opened, where Murcian got a piece of luck. His debut tends to be enjoyable and he will face Jeremy Chardy who has played five games in two years (1-4) and who, at 36 years old, is using the protected ranking to scratch the last few tournaments. Years ago, Chardy would have been a tough opponent with his serve; now he is more focused on his work as Ugo Humbert’s trainer than anything else.

Avoiding a tough first round was one of the goals, but the story gets more complicated from there. Arthur Rinderknech, should he win against Alexandre Muller, will be his opponent in the second round, and the Frenchman has just given Alcaraz a lot of trouble at Queen’s, in a three-set match in which the Frenchman break advantages.

The third round brings a great serve from Nicolás Jarry, while in the round of 16, a well-known name appears, that of Alexander Zverev. The German comes off the semi-final in Halle and looks more and more like a tennis player each time before he breaks his ankle. And he is one of the most dangerous possible rivals for the round of 16. Also, if it’s not the German, it could be Alex de Minaur, who had a great previous tour on grass with that final at Queen’s.

For rooms, the most brilliant name is Holger Rune, Alcaraz’s contemporary rival, but the Dane’s service record on this surface is meager. He won his first match on grass two weeks ago at Queen’s — where he reached the semi-finals — and here he will have to focus on winning the match first before thinking about a possible round of 16.

In the semifinals, two more big names, Daniil Medvedev and Stefanos Tsitsipas. Logically, because they are the semi-finals, but it must be taken into account that neither the Russians nor the Greeks know what it’s like to leave the round of 16 on these tracks. Alcaraz, after a few days with a thigh problem, trained for the first time this Friday at the All England Club, in a one-hour session that served to clarify the unknowns about his physical condition.

As it was already known before the draw, Djokovic went to the second table, where he will make his debut against rookie rivals in Wimbledon, such as the Argentine Pedro Cachin, and a road that includes Hubert Hurkacz or Lorenzo Musetti in the round awaits him. of 16, Andrey Rublev or Felix Auger-Aliassime in the quarter-finals and Jannik Sinner in the semi-finals. The Serbian will be in charge of opening the center field on Monday, so Alcaraz’s debut will be on Tuesday, July 4.

Badosa, before Riske

Navy, in addition to Alcaraz, will have Alejandro Davidovich playing against young Arthur Fils; Roberto Bautista, against Roman Safiullin; Roberto Carballés, against Matteo Arnaldi; Jaume Munar, who will face John Isner; Albert Ramos, with Hubert Hurkacz, and Bernabé Zapata, who will collide with Tomás Etcheverry.

In the women’s boxPaula Badosa will play against Alison Riska, Nuria Párrizas vs. Aliaksandra Sasnovich, Sara Sorribes vs. Martina Trevisa, Cristina Bucsa vs. Kamilla Rahimova, Jessica Bouzas vs. Anhelina Kalinin and Rebeka Masarova will face Egypt’s Mayar Sherif.
