Coach Wolfgang Adler (60) has so far mainly focused on bringing track athletes such as the Austrian heptathlete Verena Mayr (28) to world level. But now Adler is quickly turning his attention to improving the sprinting skills of 100 kg men on ice.

From September 1, Adler is an athletics trainer at the Swiss bobsleigh federation Sliding. An Austrian will make bobsleigh stars such as Michael Vogt (25) and Melanie Hasler (25) legs in the future. It should be unique: The Austrian who lives in Switzerland works for two national federations at the same time – at Swiss Athletics he is already responsible for the coaching training to become a “Coach Developer”.

Daughter of former bobsleigh star is heptathlon talent

How come He says to Blick, “The Bobsled Club came to me through Lucia Acklin.” The 16-year-old daughter of Guido Acklin (53), who won silver at the 1994 Olympic Games on the small sled, is a great heptathlon talent. And she is trained by Adler and his partner Liliane Leimgruber. There is another link to Vogts brakeman Sandro Michel (26), who, like Acklin, trains at LV Fricktal.

At one point, Swiss Sliding received word that Guido Acklin’s daughter’s trainer was due to move to Switzerland due to his relationship and still had free job percentages.

Partly due to the athletics in the summer and the bobsleigh in the winter, Adler says: “That worked out very well. But Bob is not entirely new to me. I used to train junior bobsleigh in Austria.”

Vogt, Hasler and Co. get a renowned man for the technical development of their sprints: Adler was coach of the year in 2019 due to Verena Mayr’s sensational bronze medal at the World Championships in Doha in Austria. He also defeated former YB coach Adi Hütter (53), who was successful with Frankfurt at the time.

The appeal of the special bob quirks

Adler watched the bobsleigh world championships in St. Moritz GR last January without even knowing he was involved. “Because I know Sandro Michel, I wanted to take a closer look,” says Adler.

Collaboration in training and races is soon to follow, with Adler supporting former Swiss Sliding athletics trainer Chris Wooley and not replacing him. “I’m really looking forward to meeting the special demands of bobsleigh,” he says.

The idiosyncrasies of the bobsleigh, that you have to run a sled, plus the downhill track, greatly annoy the coach. The high fighting weight of the bob giants is not so much a factor for training. Adler: “The biomechanics remain the same!”
