“Wouldn’t do it emotionally”: Federer does not want to say goodbye in Basel

Also this year there will be no farewell to local hero and tennis legend Roger Federer (41) at the Swiss Indoors (23 – 29 October) in Basel. And maybe one never will.

The reason is simple: Federer doesn’t want that at all. In an interview with “CH Media,” the former professional says, “I don’t think I could do it emotionally.” And he goes on to explain: “The longer I think back, to the time my mother worked at the accreditation agency and I was a ball boy, to 2019, when I won my last tournament in Basel, the more I feel it was like in a fairytale.”

Ten tournament victories in Basel

The bidder from Basel won his home tournament ten times – a record. The title in 2019 was his 103rd and last on the ATP tour. Federer played his last match at the Laver Cup in London in September 2022, it was a doubles match with his old rival Rafael Nadal (37). During the farewell ceremony, the two sat hand in hand and with tears in their eyes on the players’ bench.

«I always enjoy coming to Basel to spend time with family and friends. At some point I come back to the stadium to watch tennis. But no longer to perform there,” said Federer. He recently made a small appearance in Halle (Germany) on the occasion of the 30th anniversary of the tournament. He was honored as a ten-time tournament winner and gave a speech. (yup)
