The Mario Di Pietrantonio era came to an end in Yverdon on Thursday. The Stade Municipal presented the new president of the Vaud club to the press: Jeffrey Saunders. The American was deployed by his compatriot and major shareholder Jamie Welch.

“I have sold 90 percent of the capital to the investor,” the outgoing president announced. “The remaining part goes to companies in western Switzerland.” Mario Di Pietrantonio will not be kicked out by the new group, but will remain with Yverdon-Sport and will be responsible for marketing and sponsorship.

“Build on recent success”

But it is actually a new era that is dawning. The new majority shareholder, which is in the process of moving to Switzerland, said in a pre-recorded video: “We look forward to building on Yverdon’s recent success,” says Welch. “We want to give the club the chance to be successful in the Super League.”

After this, Saunders confirmed his new club’s ambitions. These must be achieved through three different strategies: a collaboration with all partners, a long-term build-up by the academy and an investment to keep the club in the Super League. On the latter, “It is important that we contribute to the development of the stadium,” said Saunder, who was previously president of Estoril in Portugal. “With the right infrastructure, the future looks bright.”

Between youth and experience

But should this US takeover worry Yverdon fans? Saunders replies, “This is a long-term project. We will stay as long as possible.” The exact budget is not disclosed, but will increase. The goal: “added value”. As for the squad for next season, Saunders promises a number of newcomers, a mix of young and experienced players.

The new president also promises to come to the region “15 days to three weeks” a month. A positive signal, in addition to the move of the main shareholder. Jamie Welch moves to Switzerland from Texas. He, who owns the energy company Kinetik, promises to “maintain the firm foundations of the association”.
