Will wear the Montreal shirt more often in the future: David Reinbacher.

Austrian David Reinbacher, who grew up with Kloten, is selected in fifth place in the NHL draft by the Montreal Canadiens, making him the first defenseman to be selected. The 18-year-old from Vorarlberg was one of the positive surprises of last season at EHC Kloten.

When selecting the new NHL player, Montreal legend Carey Price (35) caused a laugh at the Bridgestone Arena in Nashville, home of Roman Josi (33). When the keeper wants to announce the choice, he gets stuck with the last name of the Austrian, seems unable to pronounce it or has forgotten it. Another member of the Canadian franchise comes to his aid and announces Reinbacher’s choice.

No surprise at number 1

Canada’s Connor Bedard has been drafted as the number 1 pick by the Chicago Blackhawks. The top three positions in this year’s draft were practically set in stone this year.

A Vancouver center soon to turn 18, Bedard is regarded as one of the brightest talents of recent years, setting several records, including winning the U20 World Cup with the Canadian junior national team. As the third-worst team last season, the Chicago Blackhawks, with Switzerland’s Philipp Kurashev, were lucky enough to pick the first team.

No Swiss among the first 32

The first European is drawn second, the Anaheim Ducks secure the services of the Swede Leo Carlsson. The choice of the Columbus Blue Jackets for Adam Fantilli, who won World Cup active gold with Canada a month ago, as number 3 comes as no surprise.

None of the 32 NHL organizations were interested in a Swiss in the first round of the draft. There will be a total of seven rounds selecting a total of 224 players born between January 1, 2003 and September 15, 2005. Eastern Switzerland defender Rodwin Dionicio (Windsor Spitfires) should have the best prospects of any Swiss player. (SDA/che)
