PSG goalkeeper Sergio Rico (29) is getting better. After his riding accident at the end of May, the Spaniard fell into a coma. In June, his wife Alba Silva said he was conscious and could communicate with his hands.

Now Rico can speak again. A giant step! His wife told French sports newspaper L’Équipe: “Sergio communicates. He calls us by our names and knows exactly who we are.”

Rico remains in intensive care at Virgen del Rocio University Hospital in Seville after his riding accident in which he was hit in the head by a horse. Silva hopes that her husband can be transferred quickly. “The doctors need to know for sure. We trust them,” says the Spaniard.

Alba Silva isn’t sure if Rico knows what happened. “I don’t think so, but we’ll have to wait for him to really express himself. Right now we’re making sure he’s comfortable.”

On June 19, the goalkeeper was brought out of an artificial coma when his wife said he “recognized his relatives”. The vocal cords were still severely damaged from the three-week intubation, so at that point he could only communicate through gestures.

Driving accident in southern Spain

Rico was killed in a riding accident in southern Spain at the end of May. There was a collision with another horse. Rico was hit in the head by a hoof and suffered a cerebral hemorrhage. (jsl)
