The first qualifying round for the main draw at Wimbledon ends in disappointment for some Swiss men. The Swiss flag is held aloft in London by the two youngest, Dominik Stricker (20) and Leandro Riedi (21).
Six months older Leandro Riedi (ATP 165) already had a hard time in qualifying. Australian Thanasi Kokkinakis (ATP 89) was drawn to him in the first round. The Swiss youngster only concedes a break ball to the Wawrinka conqueror of this year’s French Open, which Kokkinakis also used. Otherwise, the 2020 Junior French Open finalist dominates the game on his own serve. After 79 minutes, Riedi completes the coup.
Berner Dominik Stricker (ATP 117) is also one round further. Against the 13-year-old American Steve Johnson (ATP 217), the Swiss does not allow a single break chance and passes with flying colors to the second qualifying round, where he will meet the Argentinian Juan Pablo Ficovich (ATP 243) on Wednesday.
However, Wimbledon is already over for the Swiss Antoine Bellier (ATP 291), Alexander Ritschard (ATP 161) and Henri Laaksonen (ATP 252). While Laaksonen and Bellier lose in straight sets, Alexander Ritschard concedes a bitter three-set defeat.
