Reusser also triumphs: Hirschi is crowned Swiss champion for the first time

Almost five years after his U21 world title, Marc Hirschi is allowed to wear a champion jersey again – the one with the white cross on a red background. The 24-year-old Berner of the UAE Emirates team was successful in national title fights for the first time after his junior titles (2015 and 2016) and won U23 gold in the time trial (2017) also in the elite.

In the sweltering heat, Hirschi was the fastest of a sextet in the last meters. After 151.9 km and more than 2,500 vertical meters in the sprint, he sent the two Valais Antoine Debons and Simon Pellaud to the other podium places. Places 4, 5 and 6 went to Mauro Schmid, Stefan Küng and Sébastien Reichenbach.

Defending champion Robin Froidevaux of the numerically superior Tudor team retired after 6 of the 7 rounds. The man from Vaud led the race for a long time together with his teammate Roland Thalmann and Fabian Lienhard. Although the leading group was later joined by the Tudor team with Reichenbach and Pellaud, it was not enough for the Swiss professional team to win.

Reusser wins solo

In the women’s race, Marlen Reusser celebrated a solo victory five days after her victory in the Tour de Suisse. In the penultimate of five laps, the European time trial champion from Bern overtook Petra Stiasny, who had been the sole leader for a long time, before taking the final 21.7km away from the local Zurich hero. In the end, Stiasny got nothing at all. More than two minutes behind Reusser, Stiasny was only fourth in the sprint for second place behind Elena Hartmann and Elise Chabbey.

Meanwhile, Marlen Reusser triumphed for the third time after 2019 and 2021. The 31-year-old from Hindelbank brought back the jersey she was unable to defend a year ago due to a corona infection. (SDA)
