A familiar face at the end of a MotoGP race: Francesco Bagnaia tops the podium.

Italy’s Francesco Bagnaia wins the Dutch MotoGP Grand Prix at Assen on Sunday ahead of compatriot Marco Bezzecchi, extending his lead in the championship ahead of the long summer break.

KTM rider Brad Binder finished third, but was dropped one place due to a track limit penalty. Spaniard Aleix Espargaro (Aprilia) inherits 3rd place.

For the 26-year-old Turin it is the second success in a row in Assen and the fourth this season (eight races). “It wasn’t easy because they put a lot of pressure on me,” says Bagnaia in the winner’s interview. Only on the last lap could he take a comfortable lead, before that he was “quite close to the limit”.

French crash

The two Frenchmen Fabio Quartararo (Yamaha) and Johann Zarco (Ducati-Pramac) have to retire after a collision on the third lap. The first slides off at turn 7 and drags his compatriot into the gravel trap. While Zarco emerges from the crash seemingly unscathed, Quartararo must be supported by helpers. (SDA/che)
